Scholarships for Camp Rising Sun Alumni

As a part of the CRS Alumni Community, alums are eligible to apply for several scholarship and educational development opportunities. Please see below for more information!

George E. Jonas (GEJ) Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of the Georges Lurcy Trust, CRS alumni, and friends, LAJF offers scholarships for the undergraduate, graduate, and PhD level to CRS alumni studying in the United States. The scholarship fund is dedicated to the memory of George E. ("Freddie") Jonas, founder and benefactor of Camp Rising Sun.

What is available: The total amount of funding for GEJ Scholarships varies from year to year. In the past, scholarship awards have ranged from about $1,000 to about $5,000 to go towards tuition or expenses such such as college-provided housing and college-provided meals, since the award is sent directly to your institution.

Who is eligible: All CRS alums, including former Camp staff are eligible to apply. The selection criteria include intellectual ability, character, financial need and an evaluation of the applicant's experience at Camp and future promise for fostering the values of Camp Rising Sun. In the past, the Scholarship Committee has awarded five scholarships per year.

How to apply: Applications for 2025-26 will open in or around June 2025. Sign up to get notified when applications open!

Fellowship at LAJF

The Fellowship with the Louis August Jonas Foundation is an opportunity, open only to CRS alumni, to learn about non-profit work while executing a project or several small projects that will further the work of LAJF. Launched in the summer of 2015, Fellow projects have included a re-design of lajf.org, Vigil Letter outreach, creation of a sustainability plan, and social media based alumni engagement. Fellows earn a $3,000 stipend for completing 300 hours of service. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age to apply.

Special Discounts for Summer Abroad Programs

The Experiment in International Living provides immersive summer abroad programs for high school students and high school graduates who have not yet started college. The 3-4 weeks long programs are held in July and are focused on critical global themes: Cultural Discovery & the Arts; Language Training; Peace, Politics, & Human Rights; STEM; and Sustainability & The Environment, in addition to programs offering College Credit & Internships. The Experiment’s programs empower young people to step off the beaten path, experience the world as a classroom, immerse themselves fully in another culture, and build the knowledge and skills needed to confront critical global issues.

The Louis August Jonas Foundation is excited to announce that The Experiment is offering to the extended members of the CRS family four (4) special discounts of $500 each to their summer abroad programs. The special discounts are available to recent CRS alums or any eligible student who has an immediate family member (sibling, parent/guardian, grandparent) who is a CRS alum.

Apply online here: experiment.org/apply.

How to claim your discount: On the first Program Selection page of your online application for admission, answer “yes” to the question, “Were you nominated to apply by your organization?” Then choose “Camp Rising Sun” from the drop-down list. This will also waive the $50 application fee.

The Experiment also offers a fully funded (free!) virtual exchange program for students ages 14-19 in the U.S. and Middle East/North Africa region. Learn more about The Experiment Digital: Leadership in Stem.

For CRS alums who are currently undergraduates, we also encourage you to check out other study abroad offerings through the affiliated organization SIT Study Abroad.
