How are LAJF Board Directors Elected?

By AnnMarie Walton, Ph.D., MPH, RN, OCN, CHES, FAAN CRS-C ‘92-94, ‘99, Co-Chair Committee on Governance

Alumni take an active part in shaping LAJF and Camp Rising Sun through their participation in committees. Each committee meets multiple times a year, and being part of them is a great way to give back to the community. It is also a great stepping stone in consideration of later LAJF Board service. Our current committees include Audit Advisory, Building and Grounds, Committee on Governance, Finance and Investment, Fundraising, GEJ Scholarship, Health and Safety, Program (includes selection), and Strategic Planning.

LAJF's Committee on Governance (COG) is the committee that recruits and reviews potential candidates for the LAJF Board and nominates some for election. Individuals may also contact members of the COG if they would like to be considered for election to a Board position and/or to learn more about the role. You can also read more about current Directors and reach out to them with questions about the role.

If one decides to apply for a Board position after support from the COG, it is then the Members Advisory Council (MAC), consisting largely of former Board members, that votes on the candidates put forth by the COG. Directors are elected for three-year terms and can be reelected for two additional three-year terms, for a potential total of nine years. At that point, there is a mandatory one year that must be spent off the Board. A member can be re-elected after that one year. There are four formal board meetings and 3 working meetings each year, all held virtually. Participation on two Board committees or other service that furthers LAJF operations and strategic plans is also expected.

To apply for a Board position, one would submit for review to the COG, who will forward to the MAC with their recommendation:

  • A completed application

  • A resume

  • A letter of reference

  • A statement of what LAJF/CRS means to you (including such things as prior service on committees, details of other Board service (past/present), a record of making significant financial contributions to LAJF relative to one’s other financial commitments, demonstrated leadership and follow-through in other areas of your life, committees on which one is interested, and that LAJF will be one of the applicant’s top three organizational commitments in terms of both time and financial contributions).

The COG is looking for a range of skills, expertise, and perspectives to make a well-rounded Board. You can also read more details about the board application and selection process and find the application form here.
