CRS Alumni Testimonial: Ruby L. ('10, '11)

Camp Rising Sun has an extensive global alumni community — with more than 6,000 alumni worldwide. Read the below testimonial from alumna, Ruby Lainez, who attended CRS as a camper in 2010 and 2011 and has been continually involved as a summer staff member since then. Ruby is from Brooklyn, New York and she currently works as a school psychologist in New York.

Camp Rising Sun completely changed my life as it was where I discovered how much of a difference each person can make in the world. I was always the type of student who blended in with the crowd, but when I came to CRS, I was forced to step outside of my comfort zone and start to learn to be a leader.

My time at Camp taught me that everyone has different abilities and strengths. Now, I put this knowledge to use as a school psychologist in New York City. I support students in getting the education they deserve based on their individual abilities. Many of the students I work with have difficulties with academics and it’s my job to help them hone their strengths, and in turn, help them succeed. It is my aim to encourage kids to be leaders despite any circumstances they may currently find themselves in.

I am grateful for my experience with Camp because through it I realized we each have special talents that we can harness to make a difference. When we all come together, our collective power and recognition of our unique qualities, will allow us to create lasting change in our communities.

Ruby has been a member of our summer staff team since her time as a camper.

Most recently, Ruby (far right), helped to facilitate our fall retreat for CRS campers who joined us virtually in 2020 and 2021.
