As the first trains and cars journeyed towards Rhinebeck in early June, the magic of a new Camp Rising Sun season was already in the air. Since then, 31 on-site staff members have been working, learning, and becoming fast friends during a staff training session to remember. Returning staff showed new counselors the ropes and former campers shared their perspectives on Camp traditions as we sang songs and kept busy getting to know each other through Teamworks. Staff training also included a teambuilding trip to the original CRS campus at Red Hook, a sunset hike at Bard College, and ice cream at CRS’s favorite local spot.

New or returning staff/alumni: I was a camper in 2018 and a Second Year Camper in 2019. 2023 is my first year as staff.
Favorite part of being a camper: The Variety Shows, because I had a chance to be on stage and share my art for one of the first times. The camping trip also was special to me. I was a leader on the trip even though it was my first time ever camping.
Instruction he’s excited to give: An Instruction about how different music genres affect the way we write and create art. In this Instruction, we’ll compare words and drawings we create while listening to music of all types.
What he’s most excited for this summer: I’m excited to get campers to start writing music, journals, or anything that will open up their creativity. I want them to know that everyone can create, even if they haven’t before or they think that they can’t. Camp was the first time I wrote a song and now music is my path. I’m also excited to have a camp band every lunchtime.
An unexpected fact: I can cycle without hands, and I’ve met one of the dads from the original Mamma Mia in real life (Stellan Skarsgård).
Now, staff are busy preparing to welcome over 50 campers from around the globe to our home in Rhinebeck for the summer. Tent Hill is prepared, Instruction ideas are brewing, and even the maple trees are swaying in anticipation of the beginning of Camp.
